WHY?
Here's a little note from one of the organisers:
"Meldrum Academy’s Trip to The Gambia
As part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award a group of 6th year pupils from Meldrum Academy have volunteered to help complete the building of a vocational skills training centre in Kerewan in The Gambia, West Africa. The training centre is run by The Presidents International Award (PIA), which is a sister organisation to the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. The PIA trains young Gambians in useful skills such as wood and metalwork, information technology, office skills, tailoring and home economics. They already have a successful training centre in Bakau and the one which we will be helping to build is their second one, in the more remote area of Kerewan.
We are trying to raise £5000 to be spent on materials to assist with both the building and the equipping of the centre. We have organised many events such as a pub quiz, a 10k run, a fashion show, a scuba diving trial, face painting and a fancy dress day."
